The 2015 Belfast Tattoo Piping Event

The 2015 Belfast Tattoo Piping Event was a Once in a Lifetime experience for me. This is an annual event.

There is something special about piping that cannot be compared to any other type of musical experience. A special something is interwoven between every well-placed musical note that is filled with the richness of the pipe and its history. The notes once graced the battlefields to give cadence to the soldiers as they marched, and it is now the sound of pride. This is something that was highlighted in the 2015 Belfast Tattoo as it is every year.
Pipe music was especially effective in the battlefield for different reasons, which may be one of the reasons it is still a very powerful musical tool today. For one, the music was used to invigorate and empower the soldiers to fight. This had to do with the ever-present complexities of the pipe notes. It is said that the melodies written back in the early 1800s followed the same unison melody, though filled with several complex numbers in between. Some have said that it is those very complexities that made pipers so important to a soldier. It would help sharpen their cognitive acuity because it was so complex that the brain continued to work to try to figure it out.

The complexity of the piping has poured over into this time, and you can see this with those who participated in the 2015 Belfast Tattoo. These pipers are serious about the craft and that ever-so special 2:1 ration scoring of the melody played. Of course, there are some that like to play outside what is expected, which is usually referred to as a counter-melody arrangement. Still, no matter the type played, it definitely requires an extreme amount of precision to achieve that unison that is expected from a piping band.

The Belfast Tattoo happens every year in Belfast at the SSE Arena, which is very well-known to locals as well as visitors who are interested in what pipers have up their sleeves in the competing year. As the years go by, the competition continues to gather a lot of support and attract visitors not only from Belfast but also visitors from all over the place to witness some of the best pipers in the world.

The competition involves over 600 international performers who are ready to shine. Everything is taken into account, such as marching, the music, and dancers. The event does cater to other acts such as solo dancers and flute bands, but everyone knows why everyone has gathered: it is for the pipers.

The Belfast Tattoo calls it the Grand Finale of the Massed Pipe And Drums. Beyond that grand finale, 2015 was a special year for all those who love good piping. It was announced that Her Majesty's Band Of The Royal Marines was to appear that year, and it was something to be experienced.

It should be taken into account that this is one of the best bands, and it was a real treat for pipers and pipe-enthusiast to see. This was the first time that the Band Of The Royal Marines appeared at this particular event, which goes to show just how important the event is becoming to all those who hold piping in high regard.

A lot more occurred during the event like the coronation of Rebekah Kerry as the Junior Ulster Champion in Londonderry. Kerry was just 13 and a member of Belfast Tattoo Highland Dancers. It was definitely a year that this young and talented dancer is not going to forget any time soon.

It was also a big night for Mervyn Herron and all those who follow piping legends. Herron has performed all over Ireland, among other regions, and he is a very respected a musician. Herron was proud to be joined by Meghan Lyons Bleary and District Pipe Band. Meghan's band is a very accomplished band that showed all visitors the level of gravitas they could expect that year. Both of these accomplished pipers have been in the game for ages, which is the reason why they were mostly in control of the event. Of course, most people who attended the event were more stoked about their performance than their organizational skills. Still, the event could not have been the success that it was without their support.

There is little that words can do to explain the entire experience; it was the kind of event that cannot be recreated. Still, at least new visitors have a chance to see another Belfast Tattoo event with new acts and the possibility of a one-of-a-kind experience.
